Responsible Rinjani

A few habits that keep the geosites intact, respect the people who live here, and keep the money you spend on the island.

Take your rubbish down the mountain. Everything you carry up comes back with you, including food scraps and tissue. Choose operators who do the same.

Trek with licensed guides and porters, and book through official channels. It keeps you safe and makes sure the people doing the hardest work are paid fairly. [VERIFY: link to the national park's official booking channel]

Leave rocks, plants and animals where they are. Pumice, crystals and flowers are part of the geosites; taking them destroys what others come to see.

Respect sacred places and ceremonies. Segara Anak and the summit are sacred to many Sasak and Balinese Hindu pilgrims. In villages and at ceremonies, dress modestly, ask before photographing people, and follow your host's lead.

Spend locally. Stay in homestays, eat at local warung, hire local guides and buy geoproducts made on the island.

Cut single-use plastic. Bring a refillable bottle and a bag; ask for no straw.
